Thermokoppel by Dewi de Vree and Rachida Ziani

Thermokoppel is a live sound-performance based on the relationship between temperature and the acoustic properties of metal. Instead of approaching in a classical way, the elements of musical instruments, they work the material for it’s physical properties. The heating up and cooling down of those elements will cause the metal to expand. This phenomenon will be used to create sound.

Dewi de Vree is a Dutch student of the ArtScience interfaculty at the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunst (KABK) in The Hague. Her main interest lies in the interaction between the human and the machine, which led to the making of “translating machines” and sound interfaces.
Rachida Ziani is a French artist who works and lives in The Hague. She is a former student of the interfaculty Artscience, she graduated in 2008 with the project “Elektrolab”. Elektrolab is a series of sound installations and performances based on electrochemical principles. This work was developed and designed together with Dewi de Vree.

Thermokoppel is their second collaboration and will be presented for the first time in the context of the exhibition EPICENTRUM.
